Carol Lipnik is acclaimed as one of New York's most individualistic and virtuosic singers. With her stunning four-octave range, subtle wit and charismatic stage presence, she draws equally on 70s art-rock, theatre music, Eastern mysticism and the decaying phantasmagoria of the Coney Island where she was born and raised. She's also a distinctive songwriter, with six albums to her credit. Her latest album, Almost Back to Normal, a collaboration with pianist Matt Kanelos and violinist/producer Jacob Lawson, weaves a magical web of Debussy-on-opium textures, insistent minimalism, soaring neoromantic angst and enigmatic lyrics that allude ominously to contemporary issues like global warming and eco-disaster. Lipnik's voice leaps octaves with jaunty, verve or sudden, operatic agitation as Kanelos works mysterious and subtly devious variations, blending magical tones from an 1895 Steinway grand piano along with Lawson's sometimes terse, sometimes lush orchestration. Throughout the album, Lipnik infuses her enigmatic, often plaintive songs with a subtle, surrealistic, often absurdist humor. 'I think of this group of songs as talismans and shields to take with you into battle - the battle being today's increasingly uncertain world,' says Lipnik. The CD package comes as an exquisitely designed 6 panel digipak with haunting pinhole photographs of Carol by Stefan Killen, styled by Machine Dazzle.
